Respiratory Therapy

The Georgia Southern University Respiratory Therapy program offers a four-year program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science with a major in respiratory therapy, as well as a career-ladder Online Degree Completion program for those already registered as respiratory therapists to obtain their BS degree.

Georgia Southern University’s Respiratory Therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.

Graduates are eligible for two credentials after graduation, and would be eligible for three board sub-specialist certifications after significant experience and training under medical direction.

The healthcare field of respiratory therapy is focused on treating patients with cardiopulmonary (heart/lung) illnesses and breathing difficulties.

Areas of Specialization

Cardiopulmonary diagnostics, smoking cessation, asthma educator-certified, critical care of adults, pediatric, newborn infants, pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep disorders specialist, acute-care hospitals supervisor or manager, long-term acute care (LTAC), physicians’ offices, research and clinical trials management, durable medical equipment, and pharmaceutical industry sales and marketing, hospice and home health agencies, and nursing homes. Healthcare management and supervisory opportunities abound for respiratory therapists with the BS degree.

Licensure and Certification

Licensure is required through the Georgia Composite Medical Board. A graduate must earn his/her Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care, in order to be eligible for a state license. Graduates of advanced Therapist programs are eligible for both the entry-level (CRT), and the advanced practice Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials in Respiratory care. All states except Alaska and Hawaii require Respiratory care state licensure
