Many sport management programs rely on curriculum designs that provide a generalist approach to career preparation. We are not one of those programs. Georgia Southern provides an innovative approach to sport management. Our students are provided with courses that cover the wide-range of career options available in the sports industry. As students progress, they are encouraged to customize their education through selection of a concentration that fits their goals. Each concentration provides 12-credit hours of specialized course work combined with 6-credit hours of guided electives where students truly choose their own path. This approach is unlike most undergraduate sport management programs in the United States.

Marketing & Revenue Generation

Positions in ticket sales, sponsorship, marketing, fundraising, and customer service are where many executives gained entry into the sports industry. The marketing and revenue generation concentration provides students with coursework that will give them knowledge and experience to stand out on the job market. Coursework includes:

SMGT 3330 Sport Marketing & Promotion 3 credits (Fall)
SMGT 3531 Brand Management in Sport 3 credits (Spring)
SMGT 4531 Data Driven Sales Methods 3 credits (Fall)
SMGT 4533 Ticket & Sponsoring Sales 3 credits (Spring)
Guided Electives 6 credits

Sport Development

Sport development is an emerging career option for sport managers who are interested using sport to benefit their communities both locally and globally. Sport development programs often seek to promote healthy communities while also providing opportunities for empowerment and economic development. Non-profits such as  Girls on the Run, Soccer in the Streets, and Major League Baseball’s RBI program offer rewarding career opportunities, as do community development departments found in most major sport franchises and athletic departments. Coursework includes:

SMGT 3530 Principles of Sport Development 3 credits (Spring)
SMGT 3532 Leadership & Sport Programming 3 credits (Fall)
SMGT 4532 Assessment & Evaluation in Sport 3 credits (Spring)
SMGT 4338 Sport Policy Development 3 credits (Fall)
Guided Electives 6 credits

Athletic Administration

The athletic administration concentration allows students to take full control of their education. Students develop their own plan of study, combining two courses from the marketing & revenue generation concentration and sport development concentration with two guided electives. This allows student to choose their own path to the sports industry.

Marketing & Revenue Generation courses 6 credits
Sport Development  courses 6 credits
Guided Electives 6 credits
