Simulation experiences provided to community
This past July, Debra Hagerty, DNP, professor in the School of Nursing, had an opportunity to provide a simulation experience on human disabilities to the Georgia Power group, Alliance of Differently-Abled People in Power [Working] Together (ADAPPT). The simulations were held during Georgia Power’s Employee Resource Group Expo. Approximately 50 attendees received individualized simulated experiences in things such as knee arthritis, hand tremors, tinnitus, eye disorders, back pain and stroke hemiplegia.
“It is important to train employers of Georgia Southern students about various disabilities that employees might develop,” stated Hagerty. “Employers who have a greater awareness and understanding of potential health issues and disabilities find compliance with and understanding ADA support successful.”
ADAPPT supports employees with disabilities and works with community members to train and educate members about services.
The simulation equipment utilized was purchased from a grant Hagerty received from the Georgia Health Foundation in 2020.
