ABSN Program Celebrates 10 Years
This fall, Georgia Southern University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
Planning for the program began in 2013 when reports from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing showed that graduates of accelerated nursing programs were priority hires by employers who value the many layers of skill and education these graduates brought to the workplace. With a baccalaureate program in nursing already in place, the nursing faculty decided to progress forward to offer an accelerated degree program and admitted the first cohort in the fall of 2014.
“Accelerated baccalaureate programs accomplish program objectives in a shorter time frame than the traditional four-year programs,” stated Tonya Sellars, DNP, program director of Georgia Southern’s ABSN program. “Instruction is intense with courses offered full-time with no breaks between sessions. Students receive the same number of classroom and clinical hours as their counterparts in traditional programs.”
To date, Georgia Southern has graduated nine cohorts with the 10th cohort beginning this fall. Five of the graduating cohorts have scored a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX with the program average of those who have graduated being 96.9%.
Dmitri Krassovski, a 2023 graduate of the ABSN program, recalled the challenges he faced early on in college and how the ABSN program benefited him.
“I did not do well when I was a young kid going to college,” stated Krassovski. “Almost ten years later, this program allowed me an opportunity to redeem myself. I am forever thankful to have had the opportunity Georgia Southern University’s Accelerated BSN program gave me. I was not only accepted into the program but excelled and passed my NCLEX.”
