Georgia Southern University’s undergraduate degree program offers the Bachelor of Science with a major in communication sciences and disorders. The communication sciences and disorders major provides preparation in the normal processes of communication and its development, as well as in the identification and treatment of communication disorders for students whose career interests include audiology and speech-language pathology. In addition, the communication sciences and disorders major provides a broad foundation in normal and disordered aspects of speech, language and hearing for students who are interested in pursuing careers in disciplines such as deaf education, speech science, hearing science, special education and child development.

The Bachelor of Science with a major in communication sciences and disorders is a pre-professional course of study that prepares students for a graduate program in the field. The communication sciences and disorders course sequence proceeds in a sequential hierarchy of courses.

Program Requirements

In addition to the coursework on the program of study the following are required.

Must complete CSDS course work, Area F coursework and related field coursework with a C or better
Complete and submit required documentation of 10 hours of community service which benefits the University, Community, and/or professions of speech-language pathology and audiology-Volunteer Form
Complete and submit required documentation of 25 hours of guided clinical observation experiences verified by ASHA-certified (CCC) speech-language pathology or audiologist
Complete speech, language and hearing screening at the RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders (Armstrong Center, Suite 25)
Satisfy benchmark assessment requirements

Note: It is the student’s responsibility to follow the benchmarks, initiate and maintain contact with their academic advisor. No exceptions to the requirements will be made.

Mission

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders Program (B.S. in CSDS) is to foster the knowledge and skills our students need for success in graduate programs and/or careers related to communication sciences and disorders by providing high-quality, engaging, and learner-centered instruction. We support the institutional mission of Georgia Southern University to prepare individuals to think, lead and serve. We also support the mission of the Waters College of Health Professions to prepare future health professionals through academic excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration, while advancing knowledge through scholarship and serving culturally diverse communities. We manifest our alignment with these missions by preparing students to demonstrate and apply knowledge of: communication and swallowing development across the lifespan; communication and swallowing disorders; anatomical and physiological foundations of communication and swallowing; cultural and linguistic diversity; and the processes of team work and evidence-informed decision making.

The Communication Sciences and Disorders (B.S. in CSDS) program will uphold a strong commitment to higher learning through innovative and engaging teaching. We look forward to being the program of choice for undergraduates in our region who are seeking careers in speech-language pathology, audiology, and adjacent disciplines. The program will sustain community engagement for the betterment of all stakeholders. We will produce graduates who are sought after by employers and other educational institutions.

Clinical Internship/Practicum Experience Update

Many of the clinical programs offered by the Waters College of Health Professions require a clinical internship or practicum experience to fulfill degree requirements. Pursuant to the University's legal agreements, participants in clinical experiences are required to abide by the workplace rules of the clinical site. The University is aware of recent federal requirements that would mandate vaccination against COVID-19 for those working in certain settings, including health care. At this time, we expect that these new requirements may significantly impact our ability to locate a placement for students who remain unvaccinated. As always, WCHP will continue to make every effort to place students at clinical sites. However, please be aware that we may be unable to locate a site to accept unvaccinated students, which may cause a delay or inability to progress and complete the program of study.
