Willie J. Burden Memorial Fund


The Dr. Willie J. Burden Memorial Fund has been established to continue Dr. Burden’s legacy of service to sport management students in the Department Health Sciences and Kinesiology. The fully endowed scholarships provides funding to deserving sport management students. Please consider furthering Dr. Burden’s legacy as an advocate of sport management students with a contribution to the fund.

Willie J. Burden Memorial Golf Tournament

The Willie J. Burden Memorial Golf Tournament is held annually at the Georgia Southern University Golf Course at University Park. The Willie J. Burden Memorial Golf Tournament serves to:

  • Remember the legacy of Dr. Willie J. Burden through one of his passions
  • Increase contributions to the Willie J. Burden Memorial Fund
  • Provide experiential learning for junior and senior sport management students

The Dr. Willie J. Burden Online Auction is an annual event held in conjunction with the Dr. Willie. J. Burden Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds from this auction will support the Dr. Willie J. Burden Memorial Fund.

Who was Willie J. Burden?

During his distinguished career, Professor Emeritus Willie J. Burden, Ed.D., served as the athletic director of North Carolina A&T and as an assistant athletic director at both Ohio University and Tennessee Tech. Over the course of his 16 years at Georgia Southern, he was a tenured, approachable, student-centered professor. He taught 13 different courses in sport management, and served as undergraduate program coordinator and advisor for the Sport Management Club. His research included over 60 peer-reviewed presentations, 16 peer-reviewed publications, and four book chapters in sport administration, student athlete welfare, and coaching. Dr. Burden was an accomplished athlete. He was a record setting Canadian Football Hall of Fame player for the Calgary Stampeders, Most Valuable ACC Football Player for the North Carolina State Wolfpack and a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
